Wedding Decoration with Fairy Lights: Haldi, Mehndi and Sangeet Ideas
By TurboTraders India ·
An Indian wedding is not one event but four or five, and each function has its own mood. Lights are the easiest way to give every function its own look without changing the whole venue. Here are ideas for each one, from the haldi morning to the sangeet night.
Sangeet: a canopy of lights
Nothing says "sangeet" like a ceiling of lights. Run long strings from the edges of the shamiana or terrace to a central pole, the way the photo above shows. Warm yellow looks rich and festive, and it flatters every outfit in photos.
For a canopy, plan by the number of strings, not the length. A 6 m wide area with strings every 50 cm needs about 12 to 14 strings of 12 m each.
Lawn dinners: bulb strings overhead
For an open-air dinner, bulb string lights hung in zig-zags between poles or trees look elegant and are bright enough to eat by. Keep them about 2.5 to 3 m high so they clear tall guests and the catering staff.
Mehndi: soft flower lights
Mehndi is a relaxed afternoon-to-evening function, so softer light works best. Blossom flower lights, where each LED sits in a small flower cap, look like a lit garland. Wrap them around the swing (jhoola), the low seating and the bride's backdrop.
Green is the colour of mehndi, so a few green strings mixed with warm yellow tie the theme together.
Haldi: bright and cheerful
Haldi is usually a morning or daytime function, so lights matter less than colour. If it runs into the evening, warm yellow strings along the mandap edges and the marigold backdrop keep the sunny haldi look after dark.
The entrance and the lane
Guests remember the first thing they see. Outline the gate, hang strings in vertical drops on both sides of the entrance, and light the lane or driveway leading to the venue.
A photo corner everyone will use
Set up one wall with strings hung in straight drops and a neon sign in the middle. Guests will queue for photos there all night.
Light up the dance floor
For the sangeet dance floor, a laser party light fills the ceiling and walls with points of light.
Planning tips
- Count strings per area, then add 10% spare for the ones that get damaged while hanging.
- Test every string before the function day.
- Keep plugs, connectors and extension boards off the ground and away from water and diyas.
- Ask your decorator which power points are free before you plan the layout.
