During Diwali and the wedding season, the whole market lights up. A shop that is not lit simply disappears in the crowd. The good news: a bright, well-lit shop front costs much less than most owners think, and the lights can be reused every year.

Why lighting sells

Shoppers in a festive market walk past dozens of shops. Bright, warm light makes a shop look open, busy and welcoming from a distance, and it draws the eye to your display. It also makes your products look better in the evening, when most festive shopping happens.

1. Outline the shop front

Run strings along the top edge, both sides and the shutter frame. This simple outline is what customers see first from across the road. Warm yellow looks festive; cool white looks clean and modern for electronics and mobile shops.

2. Make the signboard glow

Frame the signboard with a string of lights, or run a second row just below it. Customers should be able to read your shop name from far away after dark.

3. Add colour for the festival

Mix in one festive colour: red or green with warm yellow for Diwali, or blue and white for a cool, premium look. Bulb strings stand out best from a distance.

4. Welcome customers at the entrance

Hang strings in vertical drops on both sides of the door, add a marigold toran, and place a rangoli with diyas at the step. It makes the entrance feel like a celebration.

Blossom flower lights around the entrance look like a lit garland.

5. A neon sign at the counter

A small neon sign on the counter or the back wall is a fun photo spot for young customers, and they will share it.

How many strings do you need?

Measure the shop front: width plus both sides, plus the signboard. For a typical 3 m wide shop with a 3 m high front:

  • outline (3 m top + 3 m + 3 m sides): one 12 m string, with length to spare for the socket;
  • signboard frame: one more 12 m string;
  • entrance drops: 4 to 6 strings, depending on how full you want it.

So a small shop needs about 6 to 8 strings. A large showroom or a row of shops may need 30 or more.

Safety in the market

  • Use a proper extension board, not loose wires.
  • Keep plugs and connectors away from rain, dew and water from cleaning.
  • Switch everything off when you close the shop for the night.
